Inflight Radiometric Calibration of New Horizons' Multispectral Visible Imaging Camera (MVIC)

2017

© 2016 Elsevier Inc. We discuss two semi-independent calibration techniques used to determine the inflight radiometric calibration for the New Horizons’ Multi-spectral Visible Imaging Camera (MVIC). The first calibration technique compares the measured number of counts (DN) observed from a number of well calibrated stars to those predicted using the component-level calibration. The ratio of these values provides a multiplicative factor that allows a conversation between the preflight calibration to the more accurate inflight one, for each detector. The second calibration technique is a channel-wise relative radiometric calibration for MVIC's blue, near-infrared and methane color channels us…

The Reprocessed Proba-V Collection 2: Product Validation

2021

With the objective to improve data quality in terms of cloud detection, absolute radiometric calibration and atmospheric correction, the PRoject for On-Board Autonomy-Vegetation (PROBA-V) data archive (October 2013 - June 2020) will be reprocessed to Collection 2 (C2). The product validation is organized in three phases and focuses on the intercomparison with PROBA-V Collection 1 (C1), but also consistency analysis with SPOT-VGT, Sentinel-3 SYN-VGT, Terra-MODIS and METOP-AVHRR is foreseen. First preliminary results show the better performance of cloud and snow/ice masking, and indicate that statistical consistency between PROBA-V C2 and C1 are in line with expectations. PROBA-V C2 data are …

Modelling spatial and spectral systematic noise patterns on CHRIS/PROBA hyperspectral data

2006

In addition to typical random noise, remote sensing hyperspectral images are generally affected by non-periodic partially deterministic disturbance patterns due to the image formation process and characterized by a high degree of spatial and spectral coherence. This paper presents a new technique that faces the problem of removing the spatial coherent noise known as vertical stripping (VS) usually found in images acquired by push-broom sensors, in particular for the Compact High Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (CHRIS). The correction is based on the hypothesis that the vertical disturbance presents higher spatial frequencies than the surface radiance. The proposed method introduces a way to…

Radiometric calibration of SeaWIFS in the near infrared

2005

The radiometric calibration of the Sea-Viewing Wide-Field-of-View Sensor (SeaWiFS) in the near infrared (band 8, centered on 865 nm) is evaluated by use of ground-based radiometer measurements of solar extinction and sky radiance in the Sun's principal plane at two sites, one located 13 km off Venice, Italy, and the other on the west coast of Lanai Island, Hawaii. The aerosol optical thickness determined from solar extinction is used in an iterative scheme to retrieve the pseudo aerosol phase function, i.e., the product of single-scattering albedo and phase function, in which sky radiance is corrected for multiple scattering effects. No assumption about the aerosol model is required. The ae…

Hyperspectral UAV-Imagery and photogrammetric canopy height model in estimating forest stand variables

2017

Remote sensing using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) -borne sensors is currently a highly interesting approach for the estimation of forest characteristics. 3D remote sensing data from airborne laser scanning or digital stereo photogrammetry enable highly accurate estimation of forest variables related to the volume of growing stock and dimension of the trees, whereas recognition of tree species dominance and proportion of different tree species has been a major complication in remote sensing-based estimation of stand variables. In this study the use of UAV-borne hyperspectral imagery was examined in combination with a high-resolution photogrammetric canopy height model in estimating forest v…

RADIOMETRIC CALIBRATION OF A MULTISPECTRAL CAMERA

2006

We describe in detail a method for calibrating a multispectral imaging system based on interference filters. The calibration aims to remove systematic noises introduced by the sensor, and optic and/or filters from multispectral images. After which, we can correct the non-linearity of the sensor response. Systematic noises are measured through a rigorous protocol for acquiring offset, and thermal, and Flat-Field images. The methods for acquiring Flat-Field image, and linearizing sensor response are novel and particularly efficient in the case of a multispectral imaging system. Indeed, in such a system, the reconstruction of a spectrum for each pixel comes from the set of values taken by this…

Performance of a FieldSpec spectroradiometer for aerosol optical depth retrieval: method and preliminary results

2009

The performance of a FieldSpec spectroradiometer for retrieving aerosol optical depth (AOD) has been assessed after modifying its basic configuration in order to measure direct solar irradiance at ground level. The FieldSpec measurements were obtained during four summertime days in the years 2004 and 2005, over a Spanish agricultural site in Barrax, Albacete (30 degrees 3(') N, 2 degrees 6(') W, 700 m a.s.l.), in the framework of two European Space Agency mission remote sensing field campaigns. From the whole FieldSpec spectral domain (350-2500 nm) the AOD was extracted for channels within atmospheric windows. The instrument was calibrated by means of the standard Langley plot method, perfo…

Hyperspectral imaging of asteroids using an FPI-based sensor

2021

The compositions of asteroids are of interest for the planetary sciences, mining, and planetary defense. The main method for evaluating these compositions is reflectance spectroscopy. Spectroscopic measurements performed from Earth can not resolve how different materials are distributed on the asteroids, making flyby-- and rendezvous missions necessary for obtaining detailed information. Using the CubeSat platform could reduce the costs of these missions, but it also sets constraints on the payload mass and volume. One small and light instrument capable of producing spatially resolved spectral data is a hyperspectral imager based on the Fabry-Perot interferometer. We propose a method of cal…

Spectral calibration of hyperspectral imagery using atmospheric absorption features

2006

One of the initial steps in the preprocessing of remote sensing data is the atmospheric correction of the at-sensor radiance images, i.e., radiances recorded at the sensor aperture. Apart from the accuracy in the estimation of the concentrations of the main atmospheric species, the retrieved surface reflectance is also influenced by the spectral calibration of the sensor, especially in those wavelengths mostly affected by gaseous absorptions. In particular, errors in the surface reflectance appear when a systematic shift in the nominal channel positions occurs. A method to assess the spectral calibration of hyperspectral imaging spectrometers from the acquired imagery is presented in this p…

Scene-based spectral calibration assessment of high spectral resolution imaging spectrometers

2009

An accurate knowledge of the spectral calibration of imaging spectrometers is required for optimum data processing and interpretation. The scene-based spectral characterization of imaging spectrometers is frequently necessary to update or replace the pre-flight laboratory-based spectral characterization supplied by the data provider. An automatic method for the estimation of spectral calibration parameters (channel position and bandwidth) at atmospheric absorption regions from high spectral resolution imaging spectrometers (spectral sampling interval below 5 nm) is presented in this contribution. The method has been tested on two commercial instruments with spectral sampling intervals below…
